Annotated.nl uses cookies as sparingly as possible. We currently place a single strictly-necessary cookie. We do not use analytics cookies, advertising cookies, or third-party cookies of any kind.

The cookie is HttpOnly (not readable by JavaScript in your browser), Secure (transmitted only over HTTPS), and SameSite=Lax.
Why no consent banner
Under article 11.7a of the Dutch Telecommunications Act and article 5(3) of Directive 2002/58/EC (ePrivacy), consent is not required for cookies strictly necessary for the provision of a service explicitly requested by the user. Maintaining your login session during and after subscription completion falls within this exception.
If Annotated.nl ever introduces non-essential cookies (for example anonymous visitor statistics), this policy will be updated and an appropriate consent mechanism will be implemented.
Server logs (not cookies)
In addition to the cookie above, we keep server access logs. These logs record IP address, user-agent, requested URL, and timestamp. They are not cookies and are retained for 30 days. See the Privacy policy for legal basis and handling.
How to remove the cookie
You can remove the ann_session cookie through your browser’s cookie settings. Note that removing it during an active session will log you out; you will need to sign in again at https://annotated.nl/en/login/ to maintain access to your subscription.
